Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of contributors were women*. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of representation from women and non-binary people.
Let’s change that.
Edit for Equity (E4E) was founded in 2018 to improve the coverage of women and non-binary New Zealanders on Wikipedia. We held five edit-a-thon events in 2019 to coincide with New Zealand’s Suffrage 125 celebrations, during which over 23 new Wikipedia pages were created, and 130 existing Wikipedia pages were improved.
Anyone can organise an Edit for Equity event. We’ve put together a suite of resources, templates, and guides to help you get started. You can also contact us for further guidance, or for connections to local Wikipedia experts.
