Client projects

Our collaborations with clients range from one-off projects to long term multi-phase engagements. Topics we have explored through client work in the past two years include responses to severe weather events, digital preservation communities, artificial intelligence for the environment, and the future of local government in Aotearoa. Select recent projects include:

Report writing for reviews and inquiries
We have worked with teams to present the findings of complex projects commissioned by the New Zealand government. In 2022 and 2023 we worked alongside the Future for Local Government Review Panel and secretariat to edit the Panel’s interim report and draft its final report. In 2023 and 2024 we worked alongside the members and secretariat of the Government Inquiry into the Response to the North Island Severe Weather events to draft the Inquiry’s report.

Telling the story of maintenance
The Maintainers is a US-based global research network invested in concepts of maintenance, infrastructure, repair, and the myriad forms of work and expertise that sustain our human-built world. We worked with the Maintainers to build their online identity, tell the story of maintainers, help shape their strategic communications, and share the powerful work of the Maintainers’ research fellows.

Advancing AI for the environment
As part of its 2022 research agenda, the AI Forum NZ took a deep dive into AI for the environment. We were the lead writers for the Forum’s major report on AI For the environment in Aotearoa New Zealand, and we worked with the Forum to develop a set of recommendations for developing the field and investing in environmentally-beneficial AI.

Building an internet that is better for people
Internet New Zealand, manager of the .nz domain and non-profit dedicated to the development of New Zealand’s internet, is looking to understand how to build an internet that benefits everyone. As part of this work, we were commissioned to do a literature scan bringing together local and international work on what an “internet for good” looks like, through a number of lenses.

Communicating the future of fish
Future of Fish is a US-based non-profit that works with fishers and communities to end overfishing and ensure thriving coastal economies. During our long-term engagement with Future of Fish we worked to tell the tale of the fishers and systems at the center of their mission in writing, through public communications, and with beautiful graphics, videos, and reports.

Towards trusted and trustworthy automated decision-making
The Digital Council for Aotearoa New Zealand was tasked with advising the government on key issues around public trust and government use of algorithms and automated decision-making. We wrote the Council’s major research report for 2020, and worked collaboratively with the Council and other research partners to provide policy analysis and advice.
